Discovery Parks – Devonport

Discovery Parks – Devonport Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Discovery Parks Devonport? I was expecting your typical park accommodation – maybe a bit rough around the edges – but this place actually has some serious charm. It’s tucked away on Tarleton Street in East Devonport, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you’re trying to balance that “away from it all” vibe with actually being close to everything that matters.
The first thing you notice pulling in is how well they’ve managed the whole family park setup without it feeling chaotic. I mean, there are kids around during school holidays (obviously), but the layout gives everyone enough space that you’re not constantly dodging tricycles or listening to other people’s dinner conversations. The cabins themselves are surprisingly well-appointed – and I say surprisingly because I’ve stayed at plenty of these park-style places where “modern amenities” means the TV works most of the time. Here, everything actually feels like it was updated this decade. The kitchenettes are properly functional, not just for show, which matters when you’re trying to save money by not eating out every meal.
What really sold me on the place, though, is how they’ve nailed the practical stuff that travel websites never tell you about. Parking is straightforward (no hunting for spots or squeezing into spaces clearly designed for cars from the 1970s), and the reception folks actually know the area – like, they’ll tell you the Spirit of Tasmania gets busy around 6 PM so maybe grab dinner earlier if you’re heading to that part of town. Speaking of which, you’re genuinely close to the ferry terminal without being so close you hear every departure horn. The walk to Devonport’s main strip takes maybe ten minutes, fifteen if you’re meandering, and there’s this little shortcut through the residential streets that’s actually quite pleasant. During summer evenings, you’ll catch the smell of barbecues and hear kids playing cricket in the yards – very Aussie suburban, in the best way possible. The whole East Devonport area has this laid-back residential feel that’s perfect if you want to experience how locals actually live, rather than just hitting the tourist spots. I stayed during what turned out to be a particularly busy weekend (some local festival I hadn’t heard about), and even then, the place maintained that relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to sit on your little deck with a beer and just watch the world go by.

The photos on the website are accurate. We have stayed at so many places where the photos make the accommodation look so much better than reality. It looks spacious and clean - and it is. So central to everything but feels like it’s quiet and relaxing with a fabulous view. Our son loved the bouncy cushion right outside our window. What could be...

Close to the ocean and away from the city centre. Had a bouncy pillow which even my older boys loved.
What could be improved: Cabin was a little bit dated.
