Discovery Parks – Bunbury Foreshore
You know what struck me first about Discovery Parks Bunbury Foreshore? It’s actually right there on the water – and I mean *right there*. When they say foreshore, they’re not kidding around. You step out of your cabin and there’s Koombana Bay stretching out in front of you, with those Norfolk pines swaying along the waterfront. It’s one of those spots where you immediately get why Bunbury locals are so protective of their coastline.
The whole setup feels more like a proper holiday park than your typical hotel experience, which honestly works in its favor. The cabins are surprisingly well-kitted out – full kitchens that actually have decent cookware (not those flimsy tourist rental pans), and the air conditioning handles those sticky Bunbury summers without sounding like a freight train. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything’s clean and functional. The wifi can be a bit patchy during school holidays when the place fills up with families, but that’s pretty standard for these beachside spots. What really sells it though is the location – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre if you’re catching a show, and the Big Swamp Wildlife Park is just down the road if you’ve got kids in tow.
Here’s the thing about staying right on Koombana Drive – you get the best of both worlds. Mornings are dead quiet (except for the dolphins, which you’ll spot from your window if you’re up early enough), but you’re still close enough to walk into town for dinner. The Italian restaurant at the marina does this incredible seafood linguine, and there’s a decent bakery on Spencer Street that opens ridiculously early for proper coffee. Actually, skip the park’s little shop and walk the five minutes into town – better prices and you get to stretch your legs along the water. The only real downside is parking during peak season gets a bit chaotic, especially on weekends when day-trippers flood the foreshore for the markets. But honestly, for an 8.6 rating, you’re getting exactly what you’d expect – solid accommodation in a spot that most hotels would charge twice as much for. It’s the kind of place you book for the location and leave pleasantly surprised by everything else.
