DalaiLama Village
DalaiLama Village Overview
I’ll be honest — when I first walked into Hotel Astoria, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another four-star property from the outside. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that surprise you, and this place definitely did that for me.
The lobby has this understated elegance that feels genuine rather than trying too hard. There’s marble everywhere, but it’s the warm kind that makes you want to linger rather than hurry through. The staff actually remembers your name after the first day — I mean, that’s becoming rare these days, isn’t it? They’ve got this way of being helpful without hovering, which I really appreciated.
My room was on the seventh floor, and honestly, the view caught me off guard. You get this sweeping panorama of the city that changes completely depending on the time of day. Morning light hits the buildings in this golden way that made me actually get up early just to watch it with my coffee. The rooms themselves are spacious — not huge, but thoughtfully laid out so everything feels accessible without being cramped.
What really impressed me was the attention to detail in the furnishings. The bed was one of those that’s firm but somehow still enveloping, if that makes sense. Good blackout curtains too, which saved me during those first few nights when I was still adjusting to the time zone. The bathroom had this rainfall shower that actually had decent water pressure — you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case in hotels.
The hotel restaurant downstairs is where this place really shines, though. I ended up eating there three nights out of my five-day stay, which is unusual for me since I typically like to explore local spots. But their chef really knows what they’re doing — the menu changes seasonally and focuses on regional ingredients. I had this lamb dish that was so perfectly prepared I’m still thinking about it months later.
Breakfast is served until 10:30, which gave me flexibility on those mornings when I wanted to sleep in. They’ve got the usual continental options, but also some local specialties that you won’t find at chain hotels. The coffee is proper espresso-based drinks, not that watery stuff you sometimes get. Small thing, but it mattered to me as someone who needs decent coffee to function.
The spa area surprised me too — it’s not massive, but it’s well-designed with a good-sized pool and a steam room that actually gets hot enough. I spent a couple of evenings there just unwinding after long days of meetings. The massage therapist they have on staff really knew her stuff; I booked a session on my second day and it was worth every penny.
Location-wise, you’re within walking distance of the main business district, but tucked away enough that you don’t get the street noise that comes with being right in the thick of things. There’s a metro station about three blocks away, and honestly, that connection makes getting around the city pretty straightforward. I found myself walking to most places during the day — the neighborhood has character and feels safe even in the evenings.
Parking is available if you’re driving, though I’d recommend asking about it when you book since spaces seem limited. I used rideshares mostly, and the staff was always helpful about coordinating pickup times and directing drivers to the right entrance.
One thing that stood out was how quiet the hotel stays despite being reasonably busy. The soundproofing between rooms must be decent because I never heard my neighbors, even though I could see the place was pretty full during my stay. That’s something I always worry about, especially when I’m trying to get decent sleep before important meetings.
The concierge service deserves a mention too — they helped me sort out tickets for a show that was supposedly sold out, and gave me restaurant recommendations that were actually good rather than just the usual tourist traps. It felt like they understood what I was looking for without me having to explain in detail.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s got that sweet spot of being comfortable and well-run without feeling stuffy or overly formal. The kind of place where you can relax in the lobby with a drink and not feel like you’re being judged for not wearing a suit. For the price point, you’re getting solid value — good service, comfortable accommodations, and that intangible feeling that the people running the place actually care about your experience.

This place is a camping site, on the mountain, it's not very convenient for shopping and eating. But the landlord was very kind and provided me with everything I needed. Parking is very convenient because on the mountain, the starry sky is very beautiful. Living in a camping cabin, cooking some delicious food, and taking children to enjoy the...
