D Maris Bay

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of five-star places around the Turkish coast, but D Maris Bay actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. The drive out there from Marmaris takes about 45 minutes (closer to an hour if you get stuck behind one of those tour buses), but once you wind down that final stretch past Hisarönü village, you sort of understand why they built it way out here. The property sits on this dramatic peninsula where you can literally walk from one side to watch the sunrise over the Mediterranean, then stroll to the other side for sunset views. I mean, who does that?

What really got me was how they handled the whole ultra-luxury thing without making it feel stuffy. The staff remembers your name after day one – not because they’re trying too hard, but because the place genuinely feels more like an exclusive club than a massive resort. The main pool area gets busy around 11 AM (especially in July and August), but here’s something most people don’t figure out: there are actually five different beach areas scattered around the property, and the one past the spa is usually empty until afternoon. The food situation is interesting too – you’ve got your fancy restaurants, obviously, but the casual lunch spot by the marina serves this incredible grilled octopus that’s honestly better than what I’ve had in most of the fishing villages around Datça.

Parking’s never an issue, which sounds boring but trust me, it matters when you’re dealing with Turkish coastal traffic in summer. The rooms are what you’d expect for the price point, though I’d skip the garden view ones – spend the extra money for sea view because the morning light coming off the water is pretty spectacular. One small thing that bugged me: the WiFi gets spotty near the beach areas, but maybe that’s not really a problem depending on what you’re looking for. The spa’s actually worth the hype (rare for hotel spas, in my experience), and they use local olive oil in their treatments which sounds gimmicky but somehow works. Check-in was smooth, they had cold towels and local fruit juice waiting, and our room was ready even though we arrived early. You know what really sealed it for me though? On our last morning, the concierge arranged a boat trip to some hidden coves near Knidos that I’d never even heard of, and I’ve been exploring this coastline for years. That 9.2 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that gets the big things right while nailing enough small details to make you want to come back.
