Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what really got me about Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages? It’s tucked away on this quiet little street – Eacham Close – that honestly feels like you’ve stumbled into someone’s secret. I mean, Yungaburra itself is already one of those Atherton Tablelands gems that most people drive right past on their way to the coast, but these cottages are hidden even from the main drag through town. When I first pulled up, there was this moment where the rainforest canopy just sort of… envelops everything, and you realize you’re not staying at a hotel so much as camping out in someone’s really well-appointed treehouse.
The cottages themselves are actually pretty remarkable – and I say that as someone who’s gotten burned by places that promise “rainforest views” and deliver a glimpse of three sad ferns through a bathroom window. These are the real deal, with massive windows that frame the actual Daintree-style rainforest (well, the southern edge of it anyway). You’ll wake up to king parrots having what sounds like heated political debates right outside your deck, which beats any alarm clock I’ve ever used. The interiors feel like someone’s stylish aunt decided to renovate her weekend place – everything’s comfortable without being fussy, and there’s this great balance between feeling pampered and feeling like you could actually live there. Honestly, the kitchenettes are better equipped than my apartment back home.
What really makes this place special though is how it sits in the landscape. Lake Eacham is literally a five-minute walk through the bush – and I mean an actual crater lake, not some glorified pond. Most mornings you’ll have it almost to yourself if you get there early enough, before the day-trippers roll in from Cairns. The swimming is incredible (surprisingly warm for a mountain lake), and there’s something pretty magical about floating around in what used to be a volcano while cassowaries occasionally wander the shoreline. The staff here actually know the area – like, really know it, not just the stuff from the tourist brochures. They’ll tell you about the platypus viewing spot at Lake Tinaroo that nobody talks about, or which walking tracks are worth your time versus the ones that are just okay. Parking’s easy, check-in was refreshingly human, and the only real noise you’ll deal with is the forest itself doing its thing at night, which is either deeply relaxing or mildly unsettling depending on your tolerance for nature sounds at 2 AM.

Awesome! John gave us a friendly welcome and a tip for a chance to get a visit from a striped possum during our stay - it worked! When we hopped out at our cabin, there were lots of animals in view! A red-legged pademelon, musky rat-kangaroo, Bower's shrikethrush, grey-headed robin, brush turkey, Lewin's honeyeaters AND Victoria's riflebirds!!! We...
