Castaways Moreton Island
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Castaways Moreton Island, I thought it might be one of those places that sounds more exotic than it actually is. But pulling up to 100 Moreton Street in Bulwer, you immediately get that “wait, this is actually happening” feeling. The whole setup sits right on the western side of Moreton Island, and I mean literally steps from the water where you can watch the Brisbane city lights twinkle across Moreton Bay at sunset. It’s not fancy in that marble-lobby kind of way, but honestly? That’s exactly what works here.
The thing about this place is that it gets the island vibe without trying too hard. You know what I mean – no fake tropical decorations or over-the-top resort nonsense. The rooms are properly comfortable (we’re talking solid 4-star territory here), and the staff actually knows the island instead of just reading from a script. They’ll tell you the real deal about getting to the sand dunes, which ferry times actually work versus the ones that’ll leave you stranded, and where to grab supplies in Bulwer before the little store closes early. Speaking of Bulwer, it’s basically a tiny settlement, so don’t expect bustling nightlife – but that’s sort of the point. You’re here for the incredible sandboarding at the Desert, the shipwrecks you can snorkel around, and those massive humpback whales that cruise past during migration season (roughly June to November, if you’re planning).
What really sold me was how they handle the whole “island logistics” thing. Getting to Moreton Island isn’t exactly like booking a city hotel – you need the vehicle ferry from Port of Brisbane or the passenger ferry, and timing matters. The Castaways folks actually coordinate with your arrival, which sounds basic but trust me, it’s not something every place bothers with. The 8.2 rating makes sense when you factor in that this isn’t trying to be the Ritz – it’s trying to be the best possible version of an island escape, and it delivers on that promise. Sure, you might hear some noise from other guests if you’re unlucky with room placement, and the restaurant menu isn’t huge (though the seafood is legitimately fresh). But honestly, after a day of exploring the island’s wild beaches or trying to master sandboarding without face-planting, you’ll probably just want a cold drink and somewhere comfortable to crash anyway. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between actual adventure and not sleeping in a tent, this place gets it right.

The families noise and banging on our walls as a game . The drunk parents never told them off. And were noisey and running a generator up to 11:30 pm . When the shop told us of their strict 9:00 pm no noose policy

The location was beautiful and quiet except for the lovely sounds of birds in the morning. The cabin was very cosy and the bathroom was better than we expected. The bed was very comfortable and large so my partner and I could spread out after a big day! We also had a fire pit which we roasted marshmallows, which we bought from the castaways shop as...

Quite location and sitting on the beach watching the sun go down. The staff very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. The close proximity to the shop and kiosk for great food was a bonus. Camp kitchen is excellent with your own fridge space. What could be improved: We went in the middle of summer for my husband's birthday and as...

Really nice Rooms/Tents. They looked brandnew and had lots of space. Friendly people working - I would definitely come back.

My only negative point would be that the bunkbeds were too soft (large queen bed was super however).
