Braemar Lodge And Spa
You know what struck me first about Braemar Lodge? It’s not actually in the heart of Hanmer Springs village – it sits up on Medway Road, which honestly turned out to be perfect. You’re far enough from the main thermal pool crowds to feel like you’ve discovered something special, but close enough that you can walk down to grab dinner at Rustic Cafe or hit the hot springs whenever the mood strikes.
The whole place has this understated luxury thing going on that I really appreciate. I mean, it’s definitely a 5-star property, but they’re not beating you over the head with it. The spa treatments are genuinely excellent (I went for the hot stone massage after a day hiking Conical Hill and nearly fell asleep on the table), and the rooms have these massive windows that frame the Southern Alps perfectly. What really got me was the attention to small stuff – heated bathroom floors, which you’ll absolutely love if you visit in winter, and they actually stock decent coffee pods, not the usual hotel garbage. The staff seems to know the area inside and out too. When I mentioned wanting to find some decent mountain biking trails, the front desk guy – I think his name was James – pulled out this hand-drawn map showing all the local single tracks that aren’t in any guidebook.
Here’s the thing about staying here versus somewhere in the village center: mornings are incredibly quiet. You wake up to bird sounds instead of tour buses, which makes the whole experience feel more authentic. The property has its own little restaurant that does solid New Zealand cuisine – their lamb is outstanding, and they source a lot of ingredients locally. Parking is never an issue either, which sounds boring but trust me, you’ll appreciate it when you see people circling the village looking for spots during peak season. The only minor downside? Room service stops pretty early, so if you’re the type who likes late-night snacks, stock up in town. But honestly, that forced us to actually walk down to the village for evening drinks, and we ended up having some great conversations with locals at the Heritage Bar. The whole Hanmer Springs area gets this magical golden light in the evenings, especially in autumn, and the short walk back to Braemar gives you time to actually notice it instead of rushing around.

Restaurant was closed due to low occupancy numbers which is understandable, but it would have been nice to have been told that before we arrived.

One of the shower heads was a bit loose so wasn’t able to work at full pressure without it moving vertically upwards and the spray going out of shower
