The guy at check-in told me exactly when to hit the pelican feeding (4pm, but get there by 3:30 if you want decent photos), and honestly, his restaurant recommendations were spot-on. The Cowrie Restaurant down the road? Perfect for when you’re tired of hotel breakfast. The whole vibe here is refreshingly unpretentious – you’ll see families who’ve been coming back for years, couples escaping Sydney for the weekend, and the occasional business traveler who clearly knows something the rest of us don’t.

Here’s the thing about the location that took me a day to fully appreciate: you’re literally a two-minute walk from both the beach and The Entrance channel, which means you get that proper coastal feel without being stuck in the main tourist strip with all the noise and overpriced fish and chips. I could hear the waves from my room (second floor, ocean-side – definitely worth requesting), but it wasn’t overwhelming. Parking is free and actually available, which anyone who’s tried to park around The Entrance on a summer weekend will tell you is basically a miracle. The rooms are clean and functional – nothing Instagram-worthy, but the air con works well, the shower has decent pressure, and there’s enough space to spread out your beach gear without tripping over everything. I did notice the walls are a bit thin, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs, especially on Friday nights when people are in weekend mode. The pool area is small but gets great afternoon sun, and there’s this little barbecue setup that guests can use – saw a few families making good use of it around dinner time. What really sealed the deal for me was stumbling back after a long day exploring Norah Head lighthouse and finding the front desk guy still happy to chat about tomorrow’s weather and whether the surf would be any good. That 8.2 rating makes perfect sense – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing the coastal motel thing really, really well.
