BIG4 Karuah Jetty Holiday Park

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to BIG4 Karuah Jetty Holiday Park on Holdom Road, I wasn’t expecting much. Three stars, holiday park, you know what I mean? But actually, this place surprised me in the best way possible. It’s one of those spots where the rating doesn’t tell the whole story, and honestly, that 8.5 guest score makes total sense once you’ve been there.

The thing about Karuah is that it sits right where the Karuah River meets Port Stephens, so you’re getting this perfect mix of river and bay vibes without the crazy crowds you’ll find in Nelson Bay. The jetty – which, obviously, the place is named after – is literally right there, and I mean right there. You can walk to it in about two minutes, maybe less if you’re staying in one of the waterfront cabins. What I loved is how they’ve kept things pretty low-key and family-friendly without being boring. There’s enough space that you’re not hearing your neighbor’s TV through paper-thin walls, but it’s not so spread out that you feel isolated.

The facilities are actually really solid for a holiday park. The camp kitchen was way cleaner than I expected (I’m picky about these things), and they’ve got proper BBQ areas that don’t look like they’ve been neglected for years. Parking’s never an issue – there’s heaps of space, which is refreshing after dealing with some of the nightmare parking situations at other coastal spots. Check-in was smooth too, none of that waiting around while they figure out their booking system. What really got me though was how quiet it gets at night. You’re close enough to town that you can grab dinner or supplies easily, but far enough from the main Pacific Highway that you’re not dealing with truck noise all night. I slept better there than I have at some four-star places, to be honest.

The staff seem to actually know the area well – not just the touristy stuff, but like, where to get the best fish and chips (it’s at the little place near the bridge, by the way), or when the dolphins are most likely to show up near the jetty. That kind of local knowledge makes a difference, especially if you’re not familiar with this part of the coast. Sure, it’s not fancy – don’t come expecting marble bathrooms or room service – but there’s something refreshing about a place that just does the basics really well. The grounds are tidy, everything works properly, and you get that genuine holiday park atmosphere without feeling like you’re roughing it. I’d definitely stay here again, particularly if I wanted a proper base for exploring Port Stephens without paying those premium Nelson Bay prices.
