Abel Tasman Cabins Devonport

Abel Tasman Cabins Devonport Overview
You know what struck me first about Abel Tasman Cabins? It’s this unassuming little spot on Wright Street that somehow manages to feel like you’ve stumbled onto someone’s well-kept secret. I mean, Devonport itself is already one of those places that feels refreshingly removed from the touristy hustle – just a quick ferry ride from Auckland but worlds away in terms of pace. The cabins sit quietly in what’s basically a residential street, which honestly works in their favor because you get that authentic neighborhood vibe without feeling like you’re intruding on anyone’s space.
The accommodation itself is pretty straightforward – these aren’t luxury pods or anything fancy, but they’re solid and comfortable in that unpretentious way that actually lets you relax. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything gets at night; you’re close enough to the main strip that you can walk to dinner, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with any street noise. The setup reminds me of those classic Kiwi bach rentals, except with proper amenities and someone actually taking care of the place. Parking was never an issue, which – trust me – is worth mentioning because finding a decent spot in some parts of Devonport can be a real headache, especially during summer when the day-trippers descend.
Here’s the thing though – the real magic happens when you start exploring the area on foot. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the waterfront, and if you head down to the wharf early morning, you’ll catch the commuter ferry crowd mixed with joggers doing their loop around the headland. There’s this great little bakery – I think it’s called something simple like Devonport Bakehouse – where locals actually line up for their coffee, not just tourists taking Instagram shots. The whole North Head area is right there too, and honestly, climbing up to those old gun emplacements beats any expensive harbor cruise for views. What makes staying at Abel Tasman work is that you feel plugged into the actual rhythm of the place rather than just passing through. Sure, it’s a 3-star property and you can tell – the fixtures aren’t brand new and the decor won’t win any design awards – but everything works, it’s clean, and the whole experience just feels… genuine, I guess. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially when the location does most of the heavy lifting for you.
Each resort village provides a unique blend of privacy and community, where guests enjoy villa-style accommodations while having access to shared amenities and social experiences.

The fact it wasn't a motel, it had green around it and windows that looked out on green. Very clean, comfortable bed, quiet. What's not to like.
Marita from Ireland (March 26, 2025)
Lovely Cabins

Good location very close to ferry terminal. Very Quiet.
Lorraine from Australia (March 15, 2025)
the location and the way the cabins were situated not close to each other
What could be improved: No complaints
Tracey from Australia (March 2, 2025)
Location to Terminal for Spirit of Tasmania. It was budget accommodation so we got what we paid for.
What could be improved: Nothing that would impact a one night stay to catch the ferry but perhaps would not book for a holiday of several days.
Joanne from Australia (March 2, 2025)
Location was perfect for getting straight off the Spirit of Tasmania at 7.40 at night. Keys for the cabin were left out for us and easily accessible. Cabin was very clean. A bistro was close by for a late meal.
Fiona from Australia (February 23, 2025)

What could be improved: One of the cabins smelled of fried food.
