Willow Lodge

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me most about Willow Lodge? It’s one of those places that doesn’t need to shout about being special – it just is. Tucked away on Broadway Lane in South Cerney, this boutique spot has that rare quality where everything feels deliberately chosen, not just thrown together by some corporate design team. The moment you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place. I mean, they don’t even bother with official star ratings because, honestly, what’s the point when you’re doing something completely different?
The location is pretty brilliant if you know the Cotswolds at all. South Cerney sits right on the edge of the Cotswold Water Park – and I’m talking about the largest water park in the UK, though most people racing through to more famous villages completely miss it. You’re literally minutes from all these hidden lakes and walking paths that tourists never find, but you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Cirencester (locals call it “Ciren” – don’t ask me why). Parking’s never been an issue when I’ve stayed, which is more than I can say for most places around here. The village itself is proper Cotswold stone, none of that fake honey-colored nonsense you see elsewhere, and there’s something genuinely peaceful about walking back from the Red Lion pub in the evening.
What really sets Willow Lodge apart – and this might sound odd – is how they’ve managed to feel both polished and unpretentious at the same time. The rooms have this lived-in luxury thing going on, like staying at a well-traveled friend’s perfectly appointed guest room rather than some sterile hotel box. Check-in is refreshingly straightforward, none of that forced chattiness that makes you want to hide. The staff actually know the area, too, which is rarer than you’d think. They’ll tell you about the Saturday market in Cirencester or which footpath takes you around the lakes without getting muddy. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to make the most of a weekend away. The whole place runs quietly – you know how some boutique hotels can feel a bit chaotic? Not here. It’s the kind of spot where you can actually relax without feeling like you need to perform being on holiday, if that makes sense.
