Warrnambool Holiday Village

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Warrnambool Holiday Village on Henna Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots surprise you, and this one actually delivers on what matters most when you’re exploring the Great Ocean Road.

The thing about this place is it gets the basics really right, which honestly is more than I can say for some fancier hotels I’ve stayed at. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing flashy, but the beds are decent and you’ll sleep well after a day walking around the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum or checking out the whale watching platforms down at Logans Beach. Speaking of which, you’re maybe a ten-minute drive from the main whale watching spots, which is perfect during migration season (May through September, if you’re planning). The staff actually knows the area too – I mean, they gave me proper directions to Thunder Point, not just the touristy stuff everyone finds online. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere where the people working there aren’t just reading from a script.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re not stuck way out in the middle of nowhere. Henna Street itself is pretty residential, so you don’t get the noise from the main tourist strips, but you can still walk to decent coffee in the morning without needing to drive everywhere. The parking situation is straightforward too – none of that cramped, stress-inducing stuff you sometimes get at city hotels. I stayed during a busy weekend in summer and check-in was smooth, no waiting around with tired kids melting down in the lobby (though I did see families with little ones who seemed pretty content with the pool area). The whole setup just feels… practical, I guess? Like it was designed by people who actually travel with families and understand that sometimes you just need a clean, comfortable base where you can regroup between exploring Warrnambool’s coastline and the nearby volcanic lakes. That 8.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does well.
