Walnut Cottage
Okay, so I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Walnut Cottage on French Street, I almost drove past it. It’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch in Angaston, and from the outside it looks more like someone’s charming home than a place you’d book online. But that’s actually the whole point, and once you step inside, you get why this little place has a 9.6 rating.
The thing about staying here is that you’re literally in the heart of the Barossa Valley without all the tourist circus that comes with the bigger towns. French Street is this tree-lined road where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of tour buses, and you’re still just a few minutes’ walk from Angaston’s main strip. The cottage itself feels like your well-traveled aunt’s place – you know, the one with impeccable taste who’s collected interesting things over the years. The rooms have this lived-in elegance that’s way more appealing than those sterile hotel chains. I mean, there are actual books on the shelves that someone clearly chose with care, not just random decor fluff.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to stuff that actually matters when you’re traveling. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m talking proper pillows, not those pancake things), and there’s enough space to spread out your wine country purchases without living out of a suitcase. The owners clearly understand that people come to this area to unwind – there’s a little courtyard where you can sit with a glass of something local as the sun goes down, and honestly, after a day of cellar hopping, that’s exactly what you want. Parking’s right there, which might sound boring but trust me, after navigating some of the Barossa’s winding roads, you’ll appreciate not having to circle blocks looking for a spot. The whole setup just works – it’s close enough to walk to Salter’s Kitchen for dinner (do yourself a favor and book ahead), but far enough from the main road that you won’t hear delivery trucks at dawn. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night because leaving feels like leaving a friend’s house, which I suppose is exactly what they were going for.

Loved the history and the period inclusions in the cottage. It was extremely comfortable. Some lovely inclusions and we especially enjoyed being able to light a fire. The cottage was an easy stroll to Angaston. We loved the location. Being able to sit in the beautiful garden for a cup of tea was special. Thank you Lydia. What could be...
