Villaggio Mare Si

Honestly, Villaggio Mare Si feels more like stumbling upon a hidden local secret than checking into your typical tourist spot in 4-star comfort. I mean, the moment you walk through those gates, you can smell the salt air mixed with that distinctly Italian scent of sun-warmed stone and wild herbs growing along the pathways. The place has this lovely rambling quality – it’s not one of those sterile resort complexes where everything’s perfectly manicured. Instead, you’ll find these charming low-rise buildings scattered around mature olive trees and bougainvillea that’s been growing wild for what feels like decades.

What really got me was how the staff treats you like family from day one. The gentleman at reception (I think his name was Marco?) remembered my coffee preference by the third morning, and honestly, that’s when you know you’re somewhere special. Each room has this authentic Mediterranean feel – think terracotta tiles, whitewashed walls, and those heavy wooden shutters that actually keep the afternoon heat out. The air conditioning works perfectly fine, but you know what? Most evenings you won’t even need it if you open those shutters and let the sea breeze do its thing. I will say the WiFi can be a bit temperamental in some of the buildings further from the main reception, but isn’t that kind of liberating?

The hotel restaurant serves this incredible seafood – and I’m talking about fish that was probably swimming that morning. Their spaghetti alle vongole is something I still dream about (the chef sources clams from a guy down at the marina who’s been doing this for thirty years). Parking is included and there’s plenty of space, which is honestly a godsend because finding a spot in town during summer can be a nightmare. You’re about a fifteen-minute walk from the main piazza along Via del Mare – it’s this tree-lined street that locals use for their evening passeggiata, so you’ll get a real feel for the rhythm of the place. There’s also a little beach club just five minutes away where you can rent umbrellas for the day, though the public beach access is literally right there too. The only minor thing I’d mention is that rooms facing the main road can catch some early morning delivery truck noise – but request something facing the garden and you’ll wake up to nothing but birds and the distant sound of waves. Well, that and the church bells at seven AM, but even those start to feel charming after a day or two.
