First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Vault 21, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star property tucked away in Port Haverigg. The name itself is intriguing — turns out it’s housed in what used to be part of a coastal defense installation, which gives the whole place this unique character you won’t find at your typical seaside hotel. The building has this solid, almost fortress-like quality that immediately makes you feel like you’re somewhere special, not just another cookie-cutter accommodation.

Location & Setting

The location in Millom is actually brilliant if you know what you’re getting into. Port Haverigg sits right on the Cumbrian coast, and I mean right on it — you can practically roll out of bed and onto the beach. What struck me most was how peaceful it feels here, especially compared to the busier Lake District spots just inland. The parking situation is refreshingly simple too — there’s free private parking right on site, which honestly takes a load off your mind when you’re exploring this part of Cumbria. You’re close enough to Barrow-in-Furness for supplies or a night out, but far enough away to feel like you’ve properly escaped.

The Accommodation

My room had this wonderful mix of modern comfort and character that really worked. The windows frame views of either the Irish Sea or the surrounding countryside, depending on which way you’re facing — and honestly, both are pretty spectacular. The space feels thoughtfully designed rather than just thrown together, with enough room to actually relax and unpack properly. What I appreciated most was how quiet everything was; the thick walls (probably a leftover from the building’s original purpose) mean you’re not hearing every footstep or conversation from neighboring rooms.

Dining & Amenities

The on-site restaurant focuses on local ingredients, which makes sense given how close you are to both the sea and Cumbrian farms. I had some excellent fish that was clearly caught nearby, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming. The staff actually know the area well — they gave me some great tips about walking routes and hidden spots along the coast that I never would have found otherwise. It’s the kind of place where you can have a proper meal without feeling like you need to dress up or make a big production of it.

You know what really sets this place apart? It’s that combination of being genuinely peaceful while still having everything you need close by. Couples seem to particularly love it here — and I can see why, with that 9.7 location rating making perfect sense once you experience the sunsets over the water. The whole area feels like a well-kept secret, where you can walk for miles along the coast without bumping into crowds of tourists.
