First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Vacancéole – Le Village des Oiseaux, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name — but the setting immediately made sense. This four-star resort sits right in the Espace Sport et Nature du Fier, and you’re basically surrounded by wetlands and bird sanctuaries. The whole place has this calm, nature-reserve vibe that feels worlds away from typical tourist spots, even though you’re still in the French Alps region near Motz.
The Natural Setting
What really struck me was how the property blends into its surroundings — you know what I mean? The buildings don’t fight against the landscape; they sort of nestle into it. The Fier River winds nearby, and there are walking trails that lead right from the resort into protected wetlands where you can actually spot herons, kingfishers, and dozens of other bird species. I mean, they didn’t name it “Village of the Birds” for nothing. The parking is free and right on-site, which is honestly a relief when you’re hauling binoculars and hiking gear.
Accommodation Details
The apartment I stayed in was surprisingly spacious — more like a small villa than a hotel room. Each unit comes with its own kitchen, which turned out to be perfect for preparing simple meals with local ingredients from the nearby markets. The furnishings feel contemporary but not sterile, and large windows frame views of either the surrounding forests or the wetlands. Actually, couples seem to really appreciate the peaceful atmosphere here — I can see why the location scores so highly with romantic getaways.
Activities and Amenities
The resort’s location in the Espace Sport et Nature means you’re essentially staying inside a recreational area designed for outdoor activities. There are marked cycling paths, canoeing opportunities on the Fier, and guided nature walks that the staff can arrange. The on-site restaurant focuses on regional Savoyard cuisine, though having that kitchen in your apartment means you can be flexible about dining. What I appreciated was how the activities feel integrated into the natural environment rather than imposed on it.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it delivers something genuinely different — a chance to stay somewhere that prioritizes the natural environment without sacrificing comfort. The recent guest ratings (particularly that 8.9 for location) reflect what I experienced: a property that’s found its niche and does it well. You’re not getting urban sophistication here, but if you want to wake up to birdsong and fall asleep to the sound of flowing water, while still having modern amenities and easy access to the broader Savoie region, it’s pretty much perfect. The fact that couples rate it so highly tells you something about the romantic potential of a place where nature sets the mood.

The location is beautiful, there is a lot of green and space to be outside. The units are well designed, with everything that you need.

The room was very small but comfortable. It attaches to a larger apartment as an extra bedroom so we could hear the family on the other side of the door quite well. Small bed, well heated, comfortable bathroom/shower. Nice to have an adjacent room where we could lock up our bikes. Setting was pretty cool- in a public park on the Rhone River. ...
