First impression walking up – it’s tucked away on Rue des Combattants d’Afrique du Nord, which sounds way more intimidating than it actually is. The street’s pretty quiet, lined with those typical Provençal buildings that have seen better days but still have character. You know what I mean – weathered shutters, that sun-bleached stone that tells stories. The entrance isn’t flashy at all, actually took me a second to spot the sign, but that’s kind of refreshing when you’re tired of cookie-cutter hotel fronts.

What really surprised me was how spacious the rooms felt for a 3-star place. I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything fancy, but there’s this lived-in comfort that works. The kitchenette was actually functional – not just for show like some places – and I ended up using it more than expected after hitting the morning market near the old town. Speaking of which, you’re about a 10-minute walk from Fréjus’s Roman ruins, which is pretty cool if you’re into that sort of thing. The staff at check-in were… well, let’s just say they’re not going to win any enthusiasm awards, but they knew their stuff and helped me figure out the best route to avoid the tourist crowds at the amphitheater. Parking was surprisingly easy too – there’s actually space on the street most of the time, unlike some parts of the Côte d’Azur where you’re circling for hours.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place you choose for Instagram moments or fancy amenities. The pool area’s decent but nothing special, and you can hear a bit of street noise in the morning when people are heading to work. But if you want a solid base for exploring the French Riviera without paying Saint-Tropez prices, it works really well. I actually preferred staying here over some of the flashier places I’ve tried in Cannes – less pretentious, more authentic somehow. The 7.2 rating makes sense to me; it’s not perfect, but it does what it promises without any nasty surprises. Plus, you’re close enough to the coast that you can smell the salt air on clear days, and there’s something to be said for falling asleep to the distant sound of the Mediterranean rather than air conditioning units. If you’re the type who values location and honest comfort over five-star frills, you’ll probably like what Les Residences du Colombier offers.
