The Trotting Mare Caravan Park – Adults Only

HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled into The Trotting Mare – I mean, “caravan park” doesn’t exactly scream luxury, right? But this place completely changed my perspective on what glamping can be. Tucked away in Overton on Dee (which, if you’re not familiar, is this gorgeous little Welsh border village that most people drive straight through on their way to somewhere else), it’s basically the perfect hideaway for adults who want to disconnect without roughing it too much.
The whole setup is surprisingly sophisticated – and I say surprisingly because the name had me expecting something more rustic. The caravans themselves are beautifully kitted out, nothing like those cramped holiday park units you might remember from childhood trips. Everything’s been thought through, from the proper shower pressure (which, let’s be honest, can make or break a stay) to the little touches like decent coffee makers and actual wine glasses. The owners clearly get that their guests want the novelty of caravan life without sacrificing comfort. What really struck me was how quiet it gets here – you’re close enough to Wrexham that you can pop into town for supplies or a proper meal, but far enough out that you actually hear the River Dee flowing nearby instead of traffic noise.
The adults-only policy might seem limiting, but it creates this wonderfully relaxed atmosphere where you can actually unwind. I spent most evenings just sitting outside with a glass of wine, watching the light change over the Dee Valley – something I probably wouldn’t have appreciated as much with kids running around. The staff know their stuff too; they pointed me toward some brilliant walking routes along the river that I never would have found on my own, including this little path that leads to the old railway bridge. You know what impressed me most? Even during what must have been a busy weekend, it never felt crowded or chaotic. The spacing between units gives you real privacy, and the whole place has this calm, grown-up vibe that’s increasingly rare. If you’re looking for somewhere to properly switch off – maybe catch up on reading, take some decent walks, or just remember what silence sounds like – this place delivers in spades.

What a devine holiday let. We stayed in the Ascot for two nights, and it served our purpose perfectly as a base to explore North Wales. Quiet, peaceful, and with everything you could want for a home from home. There was a welcoming basket of some essentials. Bread, jam, butter, milk, and chocolate biscuits. A very nice pub restaurant is next...
