The Retreat Port Stephens
You know what’s funny about The Retreat Port Stephens? The name makes it sound way fancier than it actually is – and I mean that in the best possible way. When I first pulled up to this place on Nelson Bay Road, I was expecting some stuffy resort vibe, but it’s honestly just a solid, no-nonsense spot that gets the job done really well.
The thing about Anna Bay is that most people zoom straight through to get to the sand dunes or Stockton Beach, but if you’re smart, you’ll actually base yourself here instead of cramming into Nelson Bay proper with all the crowds. The Retreat sits right in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything – I mean, you can drive to the dunes in like five minutes, and Nelson Bay’s main strip is maybe ten minutes when traffic’s moving. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards (honestly, they feel a bit like a comfortable motel that’s been given some TLC), but they’re clean, the beds are actually decent, and the air conditioning works properly, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed around here. What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night – you’re far enough from the main road that you don’t get trucks rumbling past, but close enough that grabbing dinner or hitting up the bottle shop isn’t a production.
The staff here seem to actually live in the area, which makes a huge difference when you’re asking for recommendations. Instead of pointing you toward the obvious tourist traps, they’ll tell you about the little beach access points locals use, or which fish and chips shop is actually worth your time (it’s not the one everyone posts on Instagram, by the way). I stayed here during school holidays once – probably not my smartest move – and while it definitely got busier, it never felt chaotic like some of the places closer to the water. The parking situation is straightforward too, which sounds boring but you’ll appreciate it when you’re lugging beach gear and groceries from the car. Look, it’s a three-star place with an 8.1 rating, and that combination tells you everything you need to know – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does well. If you want marble bathrooms and a concierge, book somewhere else and pay double. But if you want a clean, comfortable base for exploring Port Stephens without the tourist markup, this place just makes sense.

Location was great. We walk to the shark rescue experience. Children had lots of fun in the pool. It was quiet at night even with young people around. Beds were comfy and we had a great time. They provided drinking water which we found really handy. What could be improved: Wi-Fi connexion wasn't great, but we were on holidays so not big deal...
