Ternélia Henri IV

Ternélia Henri IV Overview
You know what struck me first about Ternélia Henri IV? It’s tucked away on Rue Saint Gilles in this perfectly preserved medieval town that honestly feels like someone hit pause on the 15th century. I mean, Clisson isn’t your typical French destination – it’s got this weird Italian vibe going on because they rebuilt it after the Revolution with all these Tuscan-style buildings. The hotel itself sits right in the thick of it, and you can actually hear the Sèvre river if you get a room facing the right direction.
The place doesn’t have an official star rating, which initially made me nervous (you never know what you’re getting into with these boutique spots), but it’s actually got more character than half the chain hotels I’ve stayed at. The building has this solid, unpretentious feel – thick stone walls that keep things cool in summer and the kind of wooden floors that creak just enough to feel authentic without being annoying. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, though I’d recommend arriving before 6 PM since the front desk isn’t staffed around the clock like bigger places. The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully simple” – not trying too hard to be trendy, but comfortable enough that you’re not thinking about the bed or the shower, which is really all you want.
What really makes this place work is the location. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Château de Clisson (those dramatic ruins you see in all the photos), and the Saturday market happens right outside – I actually loved the gentle buzz of vendors setting up around 7 AM, though light sleepers might want to pack earplugs. The town’s small enough that you can walk everywhere, but there’s decent parking if you’re driving, which is a relief because some of these historic French towns make you park halfway to the next village. The 7.1 rating seems about right – it’s not going to blow you away, but it does what it promises without any nasty surprises. Plus, the staff actually knows the area and can point you toward the good hiking trails along the river or tell you which days the local château hosts concerts. It’s the kind of place that works perfectly if you want to explore the Loire Valley wine country without dealing with the crowds in places like Nantes, and honestly, after a day of wandering around Clisson’s bizarre Italian-French architecture, you’ll appreciate having somewhere this solid and unpretentious to come back to.
Each resort village provides a unique blend of privacy and community, where guests enjoy villa-style accommodations while having access to shared amenities and social experiences.

We booked in at short notice because we wanted to stay somewhere close to Nantes with a pool. The gite (B1) was quite basic but comfortable and clean. The shower was adequate with plenty of hot water. We stayed during a heatwave and the rooms were very hot but you could sit outside under an umbrella or in the shade of a tree. As an added bonus...
