You know what’s funny about Serenity Lodge? The name actually fits – and that’s rare these days. I stumbled across this place tucked away on Island Bank at Tallington Lakes, and honestly, it’s one of those finds that makes you want to keep it secret. The setting is properly stunning, right on the water with these massive old trees that make you feel like you’re miles from civilization (even though you’re just off Barholm Road).

The lodge itself has this lovely rambling quality – it’s boutique without being precious about it, if you know what I mean. No official star rating, but honestly, who cares when a place has character like this? The rooms have that cozy-but-sophisticated thing going on, with proper attention to detail that you notice gradually. Good bedding, actually hot showers, and windows that frame the lake views perfectly. I mean, you’re literally watching swans drift by while you have your morning coffee. The staff seem to genuinely live in the area – they’ll tell you which walking paths are muddy after rain and where to grab decent pub food in Tallington village without you even asking.

What really sets this place apart is how it sits in the landscape. Tallington Lakes isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot (which is brilliant, actually), so you get this peaceful, almost private feeling. The water activities are right there if you’re into that sort of thing – kayaking, fishing, whatever – but it’s equally perfect for just sitting on the terrace with a book. Parking’s straightforward, check-in was refreshingly human, and the whole place has this lived-in elegance that feels authentic rather than designed by committee. The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place that exceeds expectations without trying too hard. Perfect for a proper getaway when you want somewhere special but not stuffy, and close enough to Stamford or Peterborough if you need a bit of civilization.
