Reflections Shaws Bay – Holiday Park

You know what caught me off guard about Reflections Shaws Bay? I’d driven past it dozens of times on Brighton Street without really noticing it – which, honestly, turned out to be exactly why I liked it so much. It’s tucked away from the main tourist drag but still ridiculously close to everything that matters in East Ballina. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk to the Shaw’s Bay boat ramp where all the locals launch their tinnies, and the Richmond River is right there doing its thing.

The whole place has this laid-back holiday park vibe that actually works – not trying too hard to be fancy, but clearly someone’s put thought into the details. The cabins are pretty solid (we stayed in one of the newer ones) and honestly better equipped than some of the pricier places I’ve crashed at around Byron. What really sold me was stepping out in the morning with coffee and realizing how quiet it gets once the early fishermen have headed out. You can hear the water lapping against the pylons, and if you’re up early enough, you’ll catch the pelicans doing their morning patrol. There’s something about being right on the water that makes even instant coffee taste better – though don’t tell my barista friends I said that.

The staff actually know the area, which is rarer than you’d think these days. When we asked about fishing spots, the guy at reception didn’t just hand us a brochure – he sketched out where the bream have been biting and mentioned the tide times without even checking his phone. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference when you’re trying to make the most of a few days away. Parking’s easy (thank god, because East Ballina can be a nightmare during school holidays), and you’re close enough to pop into town for groceries or hit up the pub without needing to drive. The 8.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to win any architectural awards, but it delivers on what most people actually want: clean, comfortable, reasonably priced, and genuinely close to the good stuff without being in the middle of the chaos.
