Parkgate Farm
First Impressions
When you first pull up to Parkgate Farm, you’ll immediately understand why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something genuinely romantic about the setting that photos just can’t capture. This four-star working farm sits in the heart of the Lake District’s western edge, surrounded by rolling fields and ancient stone walls that seem to stretch endlessly toward the fells. The farmhouse itself has that authentic Cumbrian character, built from local stone with those thick walls that keep everything cozy inside, no matter what the weather’s doing outside.
Location & Setting
Honestly, the location near Holmrook is pretty special — you’re tucked away from the main tourist trails but still within easy reach of everything that makes this part of Cumbria magical. I mean, you can walk out the door and be on proper fell paths within minutes, or drive about ten minutes to reach the coast at Ravenglass with its narrow-gauge railway. What really struck me was how quiet it gets here in the evenings — you know that proper countryside quiet where you can actually hear the sheep and maybe an owl if you’re lucky.
The Accommodation
The room I stayed in had that perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort that’s surprisingly hard to find. Thick stone walls, original beams overhead, but with a really good shower and proper heating — the kind of place where you can genuinely relax after a day hiking. The views from the windows look out over the farm’s own fields, and there’s something quite soothing about watching the sheep go about their business while you’re having your morning coffee. The beds are actually comfortable too, which isn’t always a given in these characterful old buildings.
The Farm Experience
What makes Parkgate Farm different from your typical country hotel is that it’s still a working farm — you’ll hear the farmers going about their morning routines, and there’s something rather grounding about that connection to the land. The owners clearly know this area inside and out, and they’re brilliant at suggesting walks that most visitors never discover. They pointed me toward a footpath that leads up to some ancient stone circles that barely get mentioned in the guidebooks, and the views from up there across to the coast were absolutely stunning.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.4 rating really makes sense when you experience the whole package — it’s that rare combination of authentic character, genuine warmth from the hosts, and a location that feels properly remote without being inconvenient. Couples especially seem to love the peaceful atmosphere and the fact that you can have proper conversations here without competing with traffic noise or crowds. There’s decent parking right outside, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling hiking gear around, and the whole place has this unhurried feel that makes you want to extend your stay by at least another night.
Exclusive resorts offer guests unparalleled luxury and comfort in breathtaking locations, with world-class dining, spa services, and activities tailored to create the ultimate vacation experience.
