Paloma Oceana

So I’ve been to quite a few places along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, and honestly, Paloma Oceana caught me off guard in the best way possible. You know how Side can get completely overrun with tourists – especially around the ancient theater area – but this place sits just far enough out in Kumkoy that you actually get some breathing room while still being close enough to walk into town when you want that authentic Turkish dinner (which, trust me, you do).

The first thing that hit me wasn’t the typical resort lobby grandeur, but how they’ve managed to make a 5-star place feel… I don’t know, approachable? The staff genuinely seemed to remember my name after day two, which never happens at these bigger properties. And speaking of bigger – the grounds are massive, but in a good way. You can find quiet corners by the pools even during peak summer season, though I’d recommend grabbing spots on the eastern side in the morning if you’re not into the full sun experience. The beach access is what really sets it apart though – you’re not fighting through crowds to get to decent sand, and the water stays pretty clear even when other spots along the coast get churned up.

What actually impressed me most was how they handle the details that usually drive me crazy at all-inclusives. The food doesn’t have that reheated-buffet taste, the bars don’t water down everything after 3pm, and – this might sound weird – but the towels actually dry you off properly. I mean, you know what I’m talking about if you’ve stayed at places where the laundry situation is questionable. The Turkish night they do on Wednesdays is worth staying in for, by the way. It’s not some cheesy tourist show but feels more like what you’d stumble into at a local celebration. I ended up chatting with the chef afterward (his English is fantastic) and learned they source most ingredients from suppliers in Manavgat, which explains why everything tastes so fresh.

The rooms are solid – nothing revolutionary, but the balconies are deeper than most places, so you can actually sit out there comfortably with morning coffee. AC works well, which matters more than you’d think in July and August. Only minor complaint would be that the wifi gets spotty during evening hours when everyone’s uploading their daily vacation photos, but honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise. Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute walk to Side’s main strip, but the hotel runs shuttles every hour if you don’t feel like walking back uphill after dinner and drinks. Parking’s free if you’re driving, though navigating the narrow streets getting there can be interesting – just follow the signs for Kumkoy rather than trying to cut through Side itself.
