The whole setup is sort of refreshingly unpretentious, you know? They don’t have an official star rating because, well, they don’t really fit into those neat little boxes that most hotels squeeze themselves into. What they do have is this 9.3 rating that honestly makes sense once you’ve spent a night there. The accommodations – I mean, calling them hotel rooms doesn’t quite capture it – feel more like staying in a really well-thought-out friend’s place. There’s this attention to detail that you don’t expect, like proper coffee (not those awful instant sachets), and the kind of lighting that actually works when you’re trying to read in bed. The whole place has this olive grove theme running through it, but they’ve managed to do it without going overboard with the Mediterranean clichés.

What really gets me about this spot is the location, though I suspect a lot of people drive right past without realizing what’s here. You’re actually perfectly positioned for exploring this bit of Kent – Birchington’s got that lovely stretch of coastline that doesn’t get nearly as mobbed as Margate or Broadstairs, especially if you walk east toward the cliffs. The village itself is one of those places where you can still find a proper fish and chips shop that hasn’t been turned into some gastro-pub nonsense. Parking at Olive-Grove is straightforward, which honestly is half the battle when you’re trying to explore the Thanet coast. Check-in was refreshingly human – no automated kiosks or corporate scripts, just someone who clearly knows the area and can point you toward the good stuff. I actually ended up having a proper conversation about the best time to hit the Turner Contemporary in Margate (early morning, before the coach tours arrive, if you’re wondering). The whole experience feels like what boutique hotels should be but rarely are – personal without being intrusive, comfortable without being flashy, and rooted in its actual place rather than trying to be anywhere else.
