Oceans Resort Whitianga

18 Eyre Street, 3510 Whitianga, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what surprised me most about Oceans Resort Whitianga? It’s actually positioned perfectly on Eyre Street – close enough to the action but far enough back that you’re not dealing with the summer crowds stumbling past your window at midnight. I mean, Whitianga gets pretty lively during peak season, but this place manages to feel like a proper retreat while keeping you just a two-minute walk from the main ferry wharf and all those boat tour operators.
The resort itself has this relaxed coastal vibe that doesn’t try too hard – think modern New Zealand beach house rather than flashy resort complex. The rooms are genuinely spacious (honestly, bigger than I expected for a 4.5-star place), and most have these decent-sized balconies where you can actually sit with your morning coffee without feeling like you’re perched on a ledge. The best units face toward the harbor, though even the ones that don’t still catch glimpses of water if you crane your neck a bit. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly formal reception desk drama you sometimes get. The staff clearly know the area well; they pointed me toward the better walking tracks around Shakespeare Cliff and mentioned which days the local farmers market runs (Saturdays, by the way, and it’s worth hitting up for fresh seafood).
What really sells this place is the location within Whitianga itself. You’re literally around the corner from those glass-bottom boat tours to Cathedral Cove – which, let’s be honest, is probably why you’re here in the first place. But you’re also close to the more low-key stuff that makes Coromandel special: the Lost Spring thermal pools are about ten minutes away, and if you’re into fishing, you can walk to several charter operators without moving your car. The resort has decent parking (not always a given in Whitianga’s busier areas), and the outdoor pool area gets good afternoon sun without being completely exposed to the wind that sometimes whips off the water. I’ll be straight with you – the breakfast isn’t anything revolutionary, but it’s solid and they don’t rush you out, which I appreciated after some early morning kayaking around the coast. The whole place just feels… comfortable, I guess. Like somewhere you’d actually want to spend more than one night, rather than just crash between adventures.

Apartment was nice and clean. Was great to have a washing machine and dryer included rather than having to find a laundromat. Close to town, the beach and the activities we had booked.
What could be improved: The shower head in our apartment could do with a clean or an upgrade.
Haidee from New Zealand (1 May 2025)
We loved the heated pool and small playground for our little girl
What could be improved: There nothing we did not like
