NRMA Forster Tuncurry

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the NRMA Forster Tuncurry on Baird Street – you know how some 4-star places can feel a bit tired or corporate. But this one actually surprised me in the best way. The location is pretty much perfect if you’re trying to do the whole Lakes Way experience without the tourist trap feeling. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Forster-Tuncurry Bridge, which I mean, sounds boring but it’s actually kind of nice for evening strolls when the light hits the water just right.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – not just the standard “beach is that way” directions. The woman at check-in told me about this little bakery tucked behind the main strip that does incredible meat pies (she was right), and mentioned that if I was planning to hit the Great Lakes Museum, Tuesday mornings were dead quiet. The rooms themselves feel surprisingly spacious, especially considering how cramped some coastal accommodation can get during peak season. I had a corner room facing inland – initially disappointed about missing the water views – but it turned out to be a blessing because it was dead silent at night. No drunk backpackers stumbling back from Seagulls or early morning fishing boats rumbling past.

The pool area is where this place really shines though. It’s not huge or flashy, but it catches the afternoon sun perfectly, and there’s enough shade if you’re like me and burn after ten minutes. What I loved was that it never felt overcrowded – even when the place seemed pretty full, there was this relaxed vibe where kids could splash around without annoying the adults trying to read. The whole property has this sort of understated Queensland coastal thing going on without trying too hard, if that makes sense. You’re close enough to walk to the Forster town center for dinner (that Thai place near the post office is solid), but far enough from the main drag that you’re not dealing with the weekend warrior crowds. Parking was never an issue either, which honestly can make or break a trip when you’re hauling beach gear and eskies around. I’d definitely come back – it’s one of those places that just works without any drama.
