NRMA Cairns Holiday Park
You know what struck me first about NRMA Cairns Holiday Park? It’s actually tucked away on Little Street, which sounds tiny but puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything without being right in the thick of tourist chaos. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Esplanade and that gorgeous lagoon everyone raves about, but when you come back at night, it’s not all revved-up backpackers stumbling around.
The park itself has this laid-back vibe that honestly feels more authentic than those sterile hotel chains you see everywhere. There’s a real mix of people here – families with kids splashing around the pool, grey nomads with their massive RVs set up like temporary kingdoms, and yeah, some international travelers who figured out this place gives you way more bang for your buck. The facilities are solid without being flashy – the pool area gets busy around 4 PM when everyone’s done with their day trips to the reef or Daintree, but mornings are perfect if you want to actually swim laps instead of dodging pool noodles. The camp kitchen is one of those places where you end up chatting with random people about whether Kuranda’s worth the train ride (it is, by the way, but go early).
What I really appreciate is how they’ve managed the whole “holiday park” thing without it feeling like summer camp for adults. Sure, there are kids around, but the layout gives everyone space to do their own thing. The cabins are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but the air conditioning works like a dream, which you’ll need because Cairns humidity is no joke, especially from November through March. Parking’s never been an issue for me, and check-in is refreshingly straightforward. The staff actually know the area too, not just the scripted tourist spots. They’ll tell you which tour operators to avoid and where to grab decent coffee that isn’t tourist-priced. Speaking of which, you’re walking distance to Rusty’s Markets on weekends – grab some tropical fruit and thank me later. The only thing that might bug some people is the occasional noise from Sheridan Street traffic, but honestly, it fades into background hum pretty quickly, and it’s way quieter than staying right in the CBD.

Very quiet vacation park. The chalet was immaculate. Check in was a breeze.

The beds were really comfy and clean. We really enjoyed our stay, you get given soap and towels for the shared bathrooms. The bathrooms and toilets are clean and so is the pool around the park. They have laundry service which you have to pay but the reception was quite happy to exchange my money for coins which was a lifesaver. Really friendly...

Very nice lodge, comfy beds. Lovely staff. I arrived way earlier than expected, and they did their best for my room to be ready ASAP, I ended up checking in around 10 am and I didn't have to wait until the regular 2 pm check in.

A bit far away from the city center. The cleaning of the bathroom could've been better.

The bunk bed was kind of close to the bottom king bed so you have to be really careful not to hit your head
You also have to bring the key with you when going to toilet

Shower and toilets a little dirty, but I did check in at 850 pm…so expected I suppose.
TV is tiny.
Wifi did not work at all.

Smooth check in and check out. Location was great not far from centre and only 10 minutes to airport. Room was nice with great aircon and fridge. Shared bathrooms were sufficient. What could be improved: As we were in a lodge at the back of the park, the WiFi didn’t reach our room and also no mobile service. Had to use a key to access bathroom and...

Rooms door don't lock automatically. A sticker on the interior side of the door stating to keep locked at all times due to intruders breaking in at night would definitely help. But overall nice and clean place and friendly staff.

You need to take a bus to go to the centre if you don’t have car but it’s only 50cts.
