NRMA Bairnsdale Riverside Holiday Park
You know what caught me off guard about this place? It’s actually right on Main Street in Bairnsdale, but somehow feels like you’re tucked away from everything. I mean, when you hear “holiday park on Main Street,” you might picture traffic noise and concrete – but honestly, the Mitchell River does all the heavy lifting here. The moment you walk toward the water, that small-town road buzz just… disappears.
The cabins are pretty standard holiday park fare – clean, functional, nothing fancy – but here’s the thing everyone should know: grab one of the riverside spots if you can swing it. I stayed in one of the back units my first time (cheaper, obviously) and it was fine, but when I came back and splurged on a river view, well, completely different experience. You’ll wake up to these massive river red gums, and if you’re an early riser like me, the bird life is honestly incredible. Kookaburras start their racket around dawn, which sounds annoying but actually becomes this weird comfort after a day or two. The park’s got that proper country holiday vibe – kids riding bikes around the gravel paths, families setting up elaborate picnic spreads by the water, that sort of thing.
What I really appreciate is how the staff actually know the area. Asked about fishing spots and got proper local intel, not just “oh, try the river.” They pointed me toward specific bends upstream where the Murray cod hang out, and mentioned the best bait shop in town (it’s that little place on Nicholson Street, by the way – locals swear by their yabbies). The facilities are solid without being flash – the camp kitchen’s got everything you need, and they keep it cleaner than most places. Laundry’s decent, Wi-Fi works fine near the office but gets patchy down by the water. Honestly though, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s something to be said for properly switching off when you’re watching the river flow past. The playground keeps the kids happy, and I’ve seen plenty of families spread out here for a week or more during school holidays. It gets busy then – book ahead if you’re planning a summer visit – but even when it’s full, the riverside sites have enough space that you don’t feel cramped. Only real downside is the hot water can be hit-and-miss during peak times, but that’s pretty standard for this style of accommodation. For what you’re paying, and especially given that 8.5 rating isn’t just tourism board fluff, it’s a solid base for exploring the Gippsland lakes or just slowing down for a few days.
