You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Montville Country Cabins on Western Avenue – honestly, the name sounds pretty generic, right? But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked away just far enough from Montville’s main tourist strip that you escape the weekend crowds, but you’re still close enough to walk into town for dinner (though fair warning, it’s a bit of an uphill trek back).

The cabins themselves have this lived-in charm that feels genuine rather than manufactured. I mean, these aren’t luxury suites or anything – it’s a solid 3-star place – but there’s something really satisfying about staying somewhere that doesn’t try too hard. My cabin had this screened-in porch that became my favorite spot, especially in the evenings when you can hear the bush come alive but stay protected from the bugs. The interiors are clean and comfortable, with decent kitchenettes (the stovetop actually works properly, which isn’t always a given at places like this) and beds that don’t leave you with a sore back. The shower pressure was surprisingly good too – again, one of those things you don’t think about until it matters.

What really makes this place work is the setting. Montville sits in the Blackall Range, so you’re surrounded by that lush hinterland scenery without being completely cut off from civilization. The cabins are spread out enough that you’re not hearing your neighbors’ conversations through thin walls, and there’s plenty of parking right at your door – which is clutch when you’re hauling groceries or gear. I loved waking up to the bird sounds (kookaburras were going off every morning around sunrise) and the way the light filters through the trees. It’s particularly beautiful in the late afternoon when everything gets that golden glow. The only minor downside is that Western Avenue can get a bit busy during peak times, so there’s some road noise, but it dies down completely at night. Honestly, for the price point and that 9.2 rating, I get why people keep coming back here. It’s one of those places that just feels right – comfortable without being fancy, peaceful without being isolated, and run by people who actually seem to care about your stay.
