Gastes sits right in the heart of this incredible pine forest region, about twenty minutes from some of the most beautiful beaches on the Atlantic coast. You can literally smell the ocean and pine trees at the same time, which is honestly pretty magical. The owners clearly know their stuff because they’ve managed to create this peaceful retreat vibe while still being close enough to everything that matters. Parking is never an issue, which anyone who’s driven around the coast in summer will appreciate. The whole property stays surprisingly quiet even during peak season – I think it’s because of how the mobile homes are spaced out among the trees.

The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you spend a night here. It’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but everything works exactly as it should. The check-in process is refreshingly straightforward, and the staff actually seem to care about making sure you know about local spots worth visiting. They pointed me toward this fantastic little restaurant in Biscarrosse that I never would have found otherwise. The shower pressure is excellent (you’d be surprised how many places get this wrong), and the beds are genuinely comfortable. During the day, you’ve got this lovely communal area where you can actually meet other travelers without feeling like you’re at some forced social event.

Look, if you’re expecting a traditional hotel experience with room service and a concierge, this isn’t your place. But if you want somewhere that feels authentic to the region – somewhere you can wake up to birdsong and actually feel like you’re experiencing the real Landes, not just passing through – then honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to find better. Plus, the value is incredible considering you’re getting your own private space with a kitchen, which means you can save money on meals and spend it on the good stuff instead.
