The river’s not huge here – it’s more of that gentle, meandering kind that’s perfect for kayaking or just sitting on the bank with a book. The whole setup feels like staying at a friend’s family place in the countryside, except everything actually works and the beds are comfortable. I stayed in one of the gîtes during late spring, and you know what struck me most? How quiet it gets at night. Coming from the city, that kind of silence – broken only by the occasional owl or the river – is almost startling at first.

The rooms themselves are sort of rustic-chic without trying too hard. Think exposed beams, local stone, but with modern bathrooms and decent WiFi (which, let’s face it, matters even when you’re trying to disconnect). What I really appreciated was having a little kitchenette – nothing fancy, but enough to make breakfast or store some local cheese and wine from the market in Confolens, which is maybe fifteen minutes away by car. Speaking of cars, parking is totally straightforward here, which is more than I can say for a lot of places in France. The owners – lovely people, by the way – were around just enough to be helpful without hovering. They gave me some great tips about hiking trails along the river that I never would have found otherwise.

Here’s the thing about Manot itself: it’s genuinely tiny. We’re talking maybe 200 people, tops. But that’s the point. You’re in proper rural Charente here – rolling hills, old churches, the kind of countryside where you actually see more cows than cars. If you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, well, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want to decompress, maybe do some walking or cycling (they have bikes you can borrow), and experience that slow-paced French village life without the tourist crowds, it’s pretty perfect. The 8.2 rating makes sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it’s genuine and well-run, and sometimes that matters more than thread count or marble bathrooms. Plus, you’re positioned really well for day trips to Angoulême or even Limoges if you want a taste of city life.
