What really got me was how quiet it stays despite being so close to the main beach area – Rue des Sables is just far enough from the summer chaos on Boulevard de la Mer, but you can still walk to those massive sandy beaches Saint-Jean-de-Monts is famous for in maybe ten minutes.

You know what’s smart about staying here? You get that seaside holiday feeling without the inflated beachfront prices, plus you can actually cook some of those gorgeous mussels and oysters from the Saturday market in Saint-Jean instead of eating out every meal (though honestly, if you’re here in summer, do yourself a favor and try the fish soup at Le Petit Bouchon – locals will know what I’m talking about). The setup works especially well if you’re planning to explore the Vendée coast properly. Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is maybe twenty minutes south for those dramatic rocky coastlines, and you’re perfectly positioned for cycling the coastal paths – this whole area is incredibly bike-friendly, actually. Parking’s straightforward, which is more than I can say for most places once July hits and the Parisians descend en masse. Check-in was refreshingly simple too, none of that overly formal hotel desk drama. The whole vibe feels more like borrowing a friend’s well-kept beach house, except your friend has impeccable taste and actually knows how to maintain things properly.
