Les lodges de Sainte-Suzanne

Les lodges de Sainte-Suzanne Overview
You know what surprised me about Les lodges de Sainte-Suzanne? It’s actually tucked away on this quiet little street called rue du Verger – honestly, I almost drove past it the first time because it doesn’t scream “hotel” from the road. But that’s sort of the point, I think. This place feels more like you’re staying at someone’s really well-appointed country house than a typical 3-star hotel.
The whole setup is these individual lodge-style units scattered around the property, which means you’re not dealing with hallway noise or people slamming doors above you at midnight. I mean, Sainte-Suzanne itself is pretty sleepy anyway – it’s one of those medieval hilltop villages that honestly looks like it hasn’t changed much in centuries – but the lodges give you this extra layer of quiet that’s actually pretty rare. The woman at check-in (I think she might be the owner?) knew exactly which restaurants in the village were still serving dinner after 8pm, which saved me from wandering around hungry because, let’s face it, rural France doesn’t keep city hours.
What really got me was the attention to the little things that matter when you’re road-tripping. Each lodge has its own parking spot right outside – no dragging luggage across some massive lot. The kitchenettes are actually functional (not just a mini-fridge and a sad coffee maker), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling like you’re living out of a suitcase. The beds are comfortable enough that I actually slept past my usual 6am wake-up, which almost never happens when I’m traveling. The whole place has this rustic-modern thing going on that could easily feel forced, but it doesn’t – probably because they didn’t go overboard with the “ye olde France” theming that some places around here lean into way too hard.
Location-wise, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the village center and those incredible ramparts that Sainte-Suzanne is famous for. The morning I was there, I grabbed coffee from the little café near the church and walked the old defensive walls while the mist was still hanging over the Erve valley – honestly one of those moments that makes you understand why people fall in love with this part of France. But here’s the thing: if you’re planning to explore the broader Mayenne region, you’ll definitely want a car. The lodges work perfectly as a base for day trips (I hit Sillé-le-Guillaume and Évron the same day), but don’t expect to rely on public transport.
Is it perfect? Well, the Wi-Fi gets a bit sketchy in the evenings when everyone’s online, and if you’re the type who needs room service and a concierge, this probably isn’t your speed. But if you want somewhere that feels authentically French without the tourist circus of the bigger château hotels, and you don’t mind that small-town quiet where the most exciting evening entertainment is a good bottle of wine on your private terrace, then Les lodges de Sainte-Suzanne hits that sweet spot between comfort and character that’s honestly harder to find than you’d think.

Met by Bruno and may I say what a warm and welcoming man. Basically told me everything I need to know on the walk to the chalet. An asset to you and the guy who does the ground keeping, you know the Van Hallen looking guy. What a pleasant man and good worker.
