Les Etangs de la Bassée

Les Etangs de la Bassée Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Les Etangs de la Bassée – I mean, the address alone had me wondering if my GPS was having a breakdown. Le Trou Madame Chemin de la Tombe sounds like something out of a fairy tale, and well, it sort of is. This place sits tucked away in Gravon, about an hour southeast of Paris, where the Seine-et-Marne countryside still feels properly wild. You know those hotel chains that slap “boutique” on everything? This isn’t that – Les Etangs actually earned its quirky reputation the hard way, without any official star rating to hide behind.
The property sprawls around these natural ponds (that’s what “étangs” means, for those brushing up on their French), and the whole setup feels more like staying at someone’s incredibly stylish country estate than a typical hotel. The rooms vary wildly – some overlook the water with these massive windows that frame the reeds and wildlife, while others tuck into the main building with exposed beams and that particular French countryside smell of old wood and lavender. I actually loved the inconsistency of it all; every space has its own personality instead of that cookie-cutter hotel vibe. Parking’s easy enough, though the gravel drive can get a bit muddy if it’s been raining (which, let’s be honest, happens fairly often in this part of France). The check-in process is refreshingly low-key – they’ll hand you an actual key, not one of those plastic cards that never work when you need them most.
What really sets this place apart is how it sits in the landscape. The Bassée region is this incredible wetland area that most tourists completely miss, but locals know it’s one of the best spots for birdwatching and those long, rambling walks where you actually lose track of time. Early mornings here are magical – you’ll hear the water lapping and maybe spot a heron if you’re quiet about your coffee on the terrace. The restaurant leans heavily into regional ingredients (I mean, with all those ponds around, the fish is obviously going to be good), and they don’t try to reinvent French cooking so much as just do it really, really well. Sure, it’s not the most polished operation you’ll ever encounter – service can be a bit leisurely, especially during summer weekends when Parisians descend on the countryside – but that’s part of the charm. This isn’t a place for people who need everything to run like clockwork. It’s for travelers who want to feel like they’ve discovered something genuinely special, tucked away in a corner of France that still moves at its own pace.

I've enjoyed the location, such beautiful place. Also the pounds, were we could bath, paddle or use the boat, we're great! It's a perfect place to enjoy nature not far from Paris. The lodge was really confortable and well furnished.
