You can actually hear the ocean from most of them, which isn’t always guaranteed even at “beachfront” places around here. The staff knows the area inside and out too, not just the obvious tourist spots but the good stuff – like where to find the best seafood that isn’t overpriced, or which trails through the pine forests are worth your time. Saint-Julien-en-Born itself is one of those towns that tourists often zip right through on their way to Biscarrosse or Hossegor, but honestly? That’s their loss. It’s got this authentic Landes character that the bigger resort towns have sort of traded away.

Here’s the thing though – and I don’t say this lightly – this place actually deserves that 9 rating it’s getting. Not because everything is perfect (the Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty in some corners, if I’m being honest), but because it feels genuine. You’re close enough to the beach that you can walk there in flip-flops, but far enough from the summer crowds that you’re not dealing with packed parking and screaming kids at 7 AM. The breakfast is locally sourced without making a huge deal about it, and they’ve got this little terrace where you can sit with your coffee and actually plan your day instead of rushing through some buffet nightmare. During peak season it fills up with a mix of French families and savvy international travelers who’ve figured out that this stretch of coast is just as beautiful as the famous spots but way more relaxed. If you’re looking for a place that gets the balance right between comfort and character, and you don’t need someone holding your hand through every tourist attraction, Les Dunes de Contis is worth the detour off the main coastal route.
