Lakes Retreat
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Lakes Retreat in Millom, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect — it’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Cumbria that most people drive right past on their way to the Lake District proper. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this four-star spot so special. The holiday homes sit in this peaceful valley setting where you can actually hear yourself think, and the whole place has this understated charm that grows on you pretty quickly.
The Accommodation
My apartment was spacious and thoughtfully laid out — not fancy in a flashy way, but comfortable in all the right places. The kitchen was well-equipped enough that I could actually cook proper meals (which I ended up doing more than planned because the local shops had such great fresh produce). Large windows frame views of the surrounding countryside, and there’s something really satisfying about making your morning coffee while looking out at rolling hills instead of traffic. The furnishings feel homey rather than hotel-sterile, which I appreciated after long days exploring the area.
Location & Surroundings
Here’s the thing about Millom — it’s positioned perfectly between the Lake District fells and the Irish Sea coast, so you get the best of both worlds without the crowds. I could drive to Coniston in about 20 minutes, but I also discovered these incredible coastal walks right from the doorstep that hardly anyone seems to know about. The Duddon Estuary is particularly stunning at sunset, and there’s this sense of having the whole landscape to yourself. It’s no wonder couples rate this place so highly — there’s something genuinely romantic about the isolation and natural beauty.
Daily Life & Amenities
The retreat keeps things simple but does them well. There’s plenty of parking (which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling hiking gear), and the staff are locals who actually know the area inside and out. They pointed me toward a fantastic pub in nearby Broughton-in-Furness that I never would have found otherwise. The whole setup encourages you to slow down and settle in rather than rushing around ticking boxes — I mean, that’s sort of the point of a retreat, right?
Why Guests Love It
What really sets Lakes Retreat apart is how it manages to feel both secluded and accessible. You’re genuinely away from everything — no traffic noise, no light pollution, just proper countryside quiet — but you’re not stranded. The combination of comfortable, well-maintained accommodations and this spectacular natural setting creates something that’s hard to find elsewhere in the Lakes region. It’s particularly perfect for couples looking to reconnect without distractions, which explains those glowing reviews. After staying here, I actually understand why some guests end up booking return visits before they’ve even left.

Relaxing and comfortable stay

The place was lovey and clean and had everything we needed. The heating was very warm throughout, which was perfect for my mum, I was a bit worried as she is 87 and likes to be warm, but she said it was just right. We had a great time visiting family who live in the area. Millon is a nice little town with a few shops. There are some nice walks in...

We have stayed at Port Haverigg before but without a view of the water. Having a view of the water makes all the difference.
Mobile home was very comfortable. We were visiting relatives in Silecroft so we’re out a lot but they came back with us a couple of times and we’re impressed
