The Sorgue River runs right there, and I mean, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is literally built around these waterways, so you’re getting the full experience of why they call it the “Venice of Provence” (though between you and me, that’s a bit of a stretch). The whole Lagrange Vacances setup here feels more like a collection of Provençal houses than your typical hotel block, which I appreciated. Parking was straightforward – none of that circling-around-narrow-streets nonsense you sometimes get in these old French towns.

What really makes this place work is how it sits in relation to everything else. You’re about a ten-minute walk into the heart of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, where all those antique markets happen (Sundays are absolutely mad with crowds, just so you know), but you’re also perfectly positioned if you want to drive up to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse – it’s literally right there on your route. The rooms have this sort of… well, they’re not trying to be fancy, but they’re comfortable in that French countryside way. Good-sized bathrooms, which honestly matters more than you’d think. Some of the units have little terraces where you can sit with morning coffee and watch people walking their dogs along the river path. The whole place has this lived-in feel that I actually prefer to those super-polished resort situations. I mean, the building itself has character – thick walls, wooden shutters, the kind of details that make you feel like you’re actually in Provence, not just some generic hotel that happens to be located there.

Here’s the thing about staying here – you’re really in the sweet spot for exploring this part of Vaucluse. Sure, you could base yourself in Avignon or even Aix, but then you’re always driving back and forth. From L’Oustau de Sorgue, you can walk to dinner (try to get a table at one of the places along the waterfront), you can browse the weekend markets without dealing with day-trip crowds, and you can easily day-trip to places like Gordes or Roussillon without feeling like you’re constantly in the car. The staff seemed to actually know the area too – not just the tourist highlights, but practical stuff like which markets are worth your time and when to avoid certain routes. I’d definitely stay here again, particularly in shoulder season when L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue has that perfect balance of things being open and interesting without being overrun.
