Iona Pods

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first heard about Iona Pods – I mean, the name alone had me curious. But honestly, this place is something else entirely. Tucked away on the Isle of Iona (yeah, that mystical little island off Mull where St. Columba landed back in the 6th century), these aren’t your typical hotel rooms. They’re these sleek, modern pod-like structures that somehow manage to feel both futuristic and completely at home in this ancient landscape. The contrast is pretty striking – you’ve got these clean, minimalist pods sitting among the same hills where pilgrims have been walking for over a thousand years.
What really gets me about Iona Pods is how they’ve nailed the whole “getting away from it all” thing without making you feel like you’re roughing it. Each pod is surprisingly spacious inside, with these huge windows that frame the view perfectly – and trust me, when you wake up to the Sound of Iona stretching out toward Mull, you’ll understand why people have been coming here for centuries seeking something spiritual. The design is clever too; everything you need is built right in, but it doesn’t feel cramped or claustrophobic. Actually, it’s the opposite – there’s something almost meditative about the simplicity of it all. The pods are well-insulated (important when those Atlantic winds pick up), and the heating works perfectly, which I appreciated during my October visit when the weather was, well, typically Scottish.
The location is ideal if you want to explore the island properly. You’re close enough to walk to Iona Abbey – maybe fifteen minutes if you take your time and stop to look at the medieval carved stones along the way. The village is tiny, just a handful of houses and the abbey really, but that’s exactly the point. There’s no traffic noise here, no city lights bleeding through your curtains at night. Just the sound of waves and maybe some sheep in the distance. The ferry from Fionnphort on Mull runs regularly during the day, so you’re not completely cut off, but once that last ferry leaves around sunset, the island settles into this incredible quiet that’s hard to find anywhere else. I’d definitely recommend booking ahead, especially in summer when day-trippers flood the abbey – the pods fill up because, honestly, there aren’t many places to stay on Iona, and this is easily the most interesting option. The whole experience feels intentional, like someone really thought about what it means to disconnect and recharge in a place that’s been offering sanctuary for well over a millennium.

Great communication from owners re travel prior to storm Ashley. Location is excellent just along from the abbey with great views across the water to Mull in one direction and “the hill” in the other. Pods are warm (heated) with all essentials and dishwashing/shower block all very clean and functional. Would highly recommend
