High Tide

HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I drove past High Tide twice before spotting it tucked away on Hythe Road – and that’s actually part of its charm. This isn’t your typical seaside hotel with flashing signs and tour buses out front. It’s more like stumbling onto someone’s incredibly stylish secret, which explains why it doesn’t bother with official star ratings but somehow manages to pull a 9.7 from guests who know quality when they see it.
The thing about Burmarsh is that most people speed right through it heading to Hythe or Dymchurch, but they’re missing something special here. High Tide sits in this perfect sweet spot where you’re close enough to hear the marsh birds in the morning (trust me, it’s soothing, not annoying) but far enough from the main coastal crowds that you can actually think. The owners – and you can tell there are actual owners here, not some corporate chain – have this knack for details that matter. Like, the parking is properly sorted (miracle for this area), the WiFi actually works throughout the building, and they’ve somehow managed to soundproof the place so you’re not hearing every footstep from the room above.
What really gets me is how they’ve nailed that boutique feel without trying too hard, you know? The rooms have character – I mean real character, not the fake “vintage” stuff you see everywhere now. Think carefully chosen antiques mixed with genuinely comfortable modern bits, proper thick towels that don’t feel like sandpaper, and windows that actually open properly for those mild Kent evenings. The breakfast situation is brilliant too – they source locally (and I don’t mean that as marketing speak, you can literally taste the difference in the eggs) and the coffee is strong enough to prepare you for a day exploring the Romney Marsh or heading into Hythe proper.
I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t the place if you want a swimming pool and kids’ club. But if you’re after somewhere that feels like a proper retreat, where you can walk the coastal paths without fighting through crowds, or use it as a base for Canterbury day trips (it’s better positioned than you’d think), then High Tide gets it right. The staff actually remember your name, and not in that forced hotel training way – they just seem to genuinely care about whether you’re having a good time. Plus, being in Burmarsh means you’re ten minutes from some of the best pub food in the area, and the owners will happily point you toward places the guidebooks miss entirely.

Clean, tidy, and very well stocked, I didn’t need to bring half the stuff I did, I even brought ketchup with me to be safe but didn’t need too! Also loved the few little items placed in the fridge as a welcome, it was really appreciated and Its nice seeing the effort that was put in to make us feel welcome!

We stayed in Burmash as a stop-over before catching the Eurotunnel early the next morning. It was perfect for this - very close. Only a 15 minute drive to get there the next morning. The mobile home was spotlessly clean and tidy, and Pippa texted us in advance so we were able to arrive late and let ourselves in using the key from the keysafe. There...
