Gundagai Cabins & Tourist Park
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of tourist parks around NSW, and Gundagai Cabins & Tourist Park actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away on Nangus Road – which, honestly, sounds like the middle of nowhere until you realize you’re literally a five-minute walk from the town center and all those famous Dog on the Tuckerbox stories your parents probably told you about. The first thing that hit me when I pulled up was how quiet it was, despite being so close to the Hume Highway. You know what I mean? That kind of peaceful where you can actually hear birds instead of road trains rumbling past all night.
The cabins themselves are pretty solid – I mean, they’re not luxury retreats or anything, but they’ve got that clean, practical vibe that makes you feel like someone actually cares about maintaining the place. My cabin had this little veranda that caught the morning sun perfectly, which was honestly my favorite spot for coffee while watching the local kookaburras do their thing. The beds were comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with a brick, and the kitchenette was surprisingly well-equipped. I actually cooked a proper meal instead of living off service station pies for once. The whole park has this relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere – kids were running around on bikes, people were chatting by the camp kitchen, but it never felt chaotic or noisy.
What really sold me on this place was the location, though. Gundagai’s one of those towns that’s perfect for breaking up a long drive between Sydney and Melbourne, but it’s also worth spending a day exploring if you’ve got the time. The park’s close enough to walk into town for dinner at one of the pubs – the Prince of Wales does a decent schnitzel, by the way – and you’re right there for checking out the historic bridge or doing that touristy photo with the dog statue. The staff were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. When I mentioned I was thinking about hiking up Mount Parnassus, the guy at reception actually drew me a little map and warned me about the boggy bits after rain. That’s the kind of local knowledge you don’t get from a chain hotel. Sure, it’s not fancy – the bathroom could use a refresh and the Wi-Fi is a bit patchy – but for the price and the genuine country hospitality, I’d definitely stay here again. It’s got that authentic Australian road trip feel without making you feel like you’re roughing it too much.

There’s an interesting array of possibilities from bring your own caravan to comfy airy motels rooms. I tried both a lovely little cabin near a stream and motel set up. Both excellent. The cabin in particular is great value for money. And the staff are really lovely.

A bit close to a road but it’s not that busy

Everything was great except there was a bad odour in the cabin when we arrived. Once we aired out the cabin and put on the AC it improved.
We arrived later for our check in around 8pm.
