Discovery Parks – Tannum Sands
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Discovery Parks on Millenium Esplanade – it’s one of those holiday park chains, right? But honestly, this place surprised me in the best way. The location is actually pretty brilliant – you’re literally across from Tannum Sands beach, which means you can hear the waves from your cabin (in a good way, not that crashing-all-night way that keeps you awake). The whole setup feels more like a proper resort than your typical caravan park, and I mean that as a genuine compliment.
The cabins themselves are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but they’ve got that beachy vacation vibe down pat. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed the grounds; there’s heaps of space between sites so you’re not listening to your neighbor’s TV through paper-thin walls. The pool area gets busy during school holidays (fair warning if you’re traveling with kids who want space to splash around), but hit it early morning or late afternoon and it’s actually quite peaceful. I spent more time there than I expected, honestly. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful too – not just going through the motions, but actually knew the area well enough to point me toward the good fishing spots and which cafes in town do decent coffee.
Here’s the thing about Tannum Sands that makes this place work so well – it’s got that proper small coastal town feel without being completely dead after 6pm. You can walk to the main beach in about three minutes, and there’s enough restaurants and shops along the esplanade that you don’t need to drive everywhere (though parking’s never an issue when you do). The beach itself is fantastic for families – really safe swimming and the sand’s that soft, white stuff that doesn’t burn your feet. I found myself doing the morning beach walk thing, which isn’t normally my style, but when it’s right there… why not? For a 3-star place, it punches above its weight, and that 8.1 rating makes sense once you’ve been there. It’s not trying to be something it isn’t – just a solid, well-run holiday park in a genuinely lovely spot on the Queensland coast.

Limited cutlery and crockery. Issues with parking with next door and thin walls were noticed.

It's great to be able to cross the road and walk on the sand

Perhaps an on-site shop / cafe would be good It's fair way to the shops from the park
