Discovery Parks – Port Hedland
You know what caught me off guard about Discovery Parks Port Hedland? It’s actually way more comfortable than you’d expect for what’s essentially a mining town stopover. I mean, Port Hedland isn’t exactly known for its luxury accommodations, but this place on Taylor Street really gets the basics right – and honestly, that’s all you need when you’re either working up here or just passing through on your way to Broome.
The cabins are properly air-conditioned (thank god, because Port Hedland heat is no joke), and they’ve got that clean, no-fuss vibe that works perfectly after a long day. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night – you’re close enough to town that you can walk to the supermarket or grab a meal, but far enough from the port operations that you won’t be kept awake by trucks rumbling past at 3am. The staff actually know the area well too, which makes a difference when you need directions to somewhere specific or want to know when the tide’s right for a look at the old jetty.
Here’s the thing about staying in Port Hedland – you’re not here for resort-style luxury, you’re here because it’s a gateway to the Pilbara or you’re working in the region. Discovery Parks gets that completely. The facilities are solid (the pool’s a lifesaver during the day), there’s decent parking space for bigger vehicles if you’re towing something, and check-in is straightforward without any unnecessary fuss. I’ve stayed at pricier places in Perth that felt more impersonal than this. Sure, it’s a 3-star setup, but it’s a well-run 3-star that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The location works perfectly too – you can actually walk into town for supplies or a proper meal, and if you’re heading north toward the coast, you’re positioned right to get an early start without fighting through industrial traffic. For what Port Hedland offers visitors, this place hits the sweet spot between comfort and practicality.

It wasn't a dislike , it was value for money.
The staff were very helpful.
Mainly it was a feeling the place needed a makeover very worn , in a great position.
