Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you upfront. This spot sits right where Barmera gets interesting, and I mean literally lakeside – not one of those “lakeside” places where you need binoculars to spot water.

The thing about Lake Bonney is that it’s got this weird magic that locals have known about forever but somehow hasn’t been completely overrun by tourists yet. The park itself feels more like a proper community than just another place to crash for the night. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (no upselling, thank god), and the staff actually knew stuff about the area – like where to grab decent coffee in Barmera (hint: not many options, but they’ll point you right). The cabins are clean and functional without being fancy, which honestly worked perfectly for me. You’re not paying for marble countertops here, but everything works and there’s proper air conditioning, which matters more than you’d think during those Riverland summers.

What really got me was how the whole place comes alive in the evenings. Kids riding bikes between the sites, families setting up barbecues, and this general buzz that happens when people are actually relaxing instead of just passing through. The lake access is the real winner though – you can literally walk from your cabin and be swimming in about two minutes. During the day it’s perfect for kayaking or just floating around, and the water’s surprisingly clean. I ended up spending way more time than planned just sitting by the water with a book, watching the pelicans do their thing. Fair warning though – if you’re here during school holidays or long weekends, it gets pretty lively. Not rowdy exactly, but definitely not a quiet retreat either. The park manages it well, but if you’re after complete silence, maybe aim for weekdays. Parking’s never an issue, there’s space everywhere, and honestly the whole setup just makes sense in a way that feels effortless. It’s one of those places where the 8.4 rating actually reflects reality – not perfect, but genuinely good at what it does.
