Derw View Green Lodge

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? I’ve driven past this place dozens of times heading up toward Devil’s Bridge, and honestly, I always wondered what it was like inside. Derw View Green Lodge sits tucked away in Bryncarnedd – about ten minutes out of Aberystwyth proper – and it’s one of those places that doesn’t fit into any neat category. It’s not a traditional hotel, not exactly a B&B, just sort of its own thing perched on the hillside with these incredible views across the valley. The approach is down a narrow lane that’ll make you question your satnav, but once you’re there, you get it. The building itself has this lovely weathered stone exterior that blends right into the Welsh countryside, and there’s something about the way it sits in the landscape that feels… well, right.
What really struck me was how quiet it gets once the sun starts setting. I mean, proper quiet – no traffic hum, just sheep occasionally bleating in the distance and maybe the odd red kite calling overhead. The owners clearly know their stuff when it comes to design; everything feels thoughtfully put together without being precious about it. The rooms have these gorgeous slate touches (probably local stuff from the old quarries) and windows that frame the view like paintings. You’ll want to leave the curtains open at night, honestly – the stars out here are something else when it’s clear. Parking’s straightforward enough, just a gravel area that crunches under your feet, and check-in feels more like arriving at a friend’s place than a hotel. They actually take time to chat about the area, recommend walks, that sort of thing.
The location is brilliant if you want to explore properly – you’re close enough to nip into Aberystwyth for dinner (though honestly, book somewhere decent in advance because the town can be hit or miss), but far enough out that you feel like you’re actually in Wales, not just visiting it. Constitution Hill is maybe fifteen minutes away if you fancy the cliff railway, and the coastal path picks up just down the road. I’d probably avoid peak summer if you’re after complete peace – July and August bring more families to the area and the narrow roads can get a bit mad. But spring or autumn? Perfect. There’s central heating that actually works (always a gamble in these old buildings), and the whole place has this lovely woody smell – cedar maybe? The only minor thing is that mobile signal can be patchy depending on your network, but that’s pretty standard once you get into the hills around here. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels genuinely Welsh without being touristy about it, this is your spot.
