Coonawarra Bush Holiday Park
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Coonawarra Bush Holiday Park on Comaum School Road – honestly, the name made it sound like some basic camping ground. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in proper wine country (you’re literally surrounded by some of Australia’s best cabernet sauvignon vineyards), and there’s this laid-back vibe that just makes you want to slow down and breathe. The moment you drive in, you’ll notice how quiet it gets – I mean, you’re far enough from the main Riddoch Highway that you won’t hear trucks rumbling past, but close enough that getting to Penola for dinner or supplies is just a ten-minute drive.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel both rustic and comfortable at the same time. The cabins are actually well-maintained – not fancy, but everything works properly, which honestly can’t be said for every holiday park I’ve stayed at. The powered sites are generous too, with plenty of room between you and your neighbors, so you’re not listening to someone else’s TV through thin walls. I stayed during vintage season in March, and while the local wineries were buzzing with activity, the park itself stayed surprisingly peaceful. The owners clearly know their stuff – they’ve got local wine tour recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots, and they pointed me toward this little cellar door about five minutes away that I never would’ve found otherwise.
What I really appreciate is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. This isn’t some resort with a fancy pool and conference facilities – it’s a proper bush setting where you can actually see stars at night (seriously, the light pollution is minimal out here), and the morning bird chorus is better than any alarm clock. The amenities are clean and functional, check-in was straightforward, and there’s decent mobile coverage if you need to stay connected. I’d definitely come back, especially during the cooler months when you can really enjoy being outdoors. Fair warning though – book ahead if you’re planning to visit during vintage time or any of the local food and wine festivals, because word is getting out about this little gem.

This was my first experience of clamping - absolutely loved our time here , beautiful setting facing the vineyards and best nights sleep. The facilities are clean and great personal space for showering etc. What could be improved: The wooden toilet huts are a little horrid and I don’t think they really need them - the toilets on the site are...

I'd booked a rent with a private loo. But we still had to walk to the shared facilities

Exactly what I was looking for, a camping experience without all the work of camping.

Would have preferred just one bed with extra walking room in the tent vs 2 additional twin beds.

I loved how this place felt like a home away from home. The wildlife, the natural environment, kids being kids, playing in the sprinklers, going on adventures in the bush. Just amazing. I could stay here time and time again. Great place for kids. What could be improved: Last night there were some guests playing loud trashy music which completely...
