Carpenters Cottages
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Carpenters Cottages in Llanishen, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name suggests something rustic, but this five-star property is actually a beautifully restored collection of stone cottages that manages to feel both historic and surprisingly luxurious. You know what struck me most? The way they’ve preserved the original character while adding all those little touches that make a stay genuinely special — heated bathroom floors, Egyptian cotton linens, that sort of thing.
Location & Setting
The location is honestly perfect if you’re looking to escape without being completely cut off from civilization. Llanishen sits in this lovely pocket of the Welsh countryside where you get rolling hills and proper country lanes, but you’re still within reasonable reach of larger towns when you need them. I mean, couples seem to absolutely love it here — and I can see why. There’s something about the peaceful setting that just makes you want to slow down and actually talk to each other instead of scrolling through phones.
The Accommodations
Each cottage feels like staying in someone’s beautifully appointed country home rather than a typical hotel room. The stone walls and exposed beams give you that authentic Welsh cottage experience, but then you’ve got underfloor heating and rainfall showers that remind you this is definitely luxury territory. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail — proper coffee machines, locally sourced toiletries, and windows that actually frame the countryside views like paintings. The kitchen areas are compact but thoughtfully designed, perfect for preparing simple meals with local ingredients.
Dining & Local Flavors
The on-site restaurant at the Carpenters Arms is where things get really interesting. It’s not trying to be fancy for fancy’s sake — instead, they focus on excellent local ingredients prepared with real skill. I had one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever tasted, and the staff actually knew where the meat came from (a farm about ten miles away, if you’re curious). The atmosphere strikes this perfect balance between cozy pub and upscale dining, which honestly isn’t easy to pull off.
Why Guests Love It
What makes this place work so well is how it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Free parking might sound like a small thing, but when you’re exploring the Welsh countryside, having a guaranteed spot to leave your car is actually pretty valuable. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience — they’ll point you toward the best walking trails or recommend which local attractions are worth your time. It’s the kind of place where you arrive feeling a bit frazzled from travel and leave wondering if you could somehow extend your stay by a few more days.

Verity
A great location with the important facilities near buy ie petrol station, village shop, pub. Locals are very helpful and friendly.
The cottage was fully equipped so you didn't have to travel with the kitchen sink!
Only 15 minutes away from Monmouth which is a great town if you need some retail therapy. Loads of excellent places to eat out.

Lovely and clean, spacious. The kitchen was great- all the facilities that you'd need and more with the dishwasher and washing machine (we didn't use as only stayed for a short break but would definitely have used if staying longer).
The pub next door served great food and everyone was very friendly- there was a good atmosphere.
