HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about Carpenters Cottages? The name doesn’t really prepare you for what you’re walking into. I mean, when you pull up to this place in Llanishen – and honestly, finding it feels like you’re discovering some secret locals have been keeping – it’s not just cottages attached to a pub. It’s actually this really thoughtful setup where they’ve taken the whole Carpenters Arms concept and created these standalone spaces that feel properly private while still being connected to the main building.

The location is sort of brilliant, actually. You’re in this tiny Welsh village that most people drive straight through on their way to somewhere else, but that’s exactly what makes it work. Llanishen sits in this sweet spot where you can walk along the Usk Valley without bumping into crowds, and the cottages are positioned so you get these views across the countryside that change completely depending on the weather – I stayed during one of those weeks where it was sunny one minute and properly moody the next, and honestly both versions were stunning. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward (none of that squeezing into impossibly tight spaces you get at some country places), and the check-in process feels more like being welcomed by someone’s particularly organized friends than dealing with hotel formalities.

What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail that goes beyond the obvious five-star stuff. The cottages themselves have this lived-in quality – not shabby, but not so pristine that you’re afraid to actually use anything. The kitchens are set up like someone who actually cooks designed them, with proper knives and pans you’d choose to use at home. The beds are that perfect firmness where you sink in just enough, and the heating works intuitively, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places get that wrong. The connection to the Carpenters Arms means you can wander over for dinner without having to drive anywhere, but you’re not stuck with typical pub food – they’ve got this menu that changes based on what’s actually good right now, which I appreciate. The whole area goes properly quiet after dark, so if you’re someone who needs actual silence to sleep well, this delivers. I’d say the 8.2 rating is about right – it’s not trying to be flashy or revolutionary, it’s just doing everything really well in a setting that feels genuinely special rather than manufactured.

A great location with the important facilities near buy ie petrol station, village shop, pub. Locals are very helpful and friendly.
The cottage was fully equipped so you didn't have to travel with the kitchen sink!
Only 15 minutes away from Monmouth which is a great town if you need some retail therapy. Loads of excellent places to eat out.

Lovely and clean, spacious. The kitchen was great- all the facilities that you'd need and more with the dishwasher and washing machine (we didn't use as only stayed for a short break but would definitely have used if staying longer).

The pub next door served great food and everyone was very friendly- there was a good atmosphere.
