Camping RCN Val de Cantobre

Camping RCN Val de Cantobre Overview
You know what caught me off guard about RCN Val de Cantobre? It’s technically camping, but honestly, this place feels more like a resort that just happens to be outdoors. I mean, we’re talking 5-star camping here in the heart of the Aveyron countryside – and yeah, that’s actually a thing in France. The whole setup sits right in Cantobre village (population maybe 200 on a good day), which is one of those stone villages that clings to a cliff like it’s defying gravity.
The location is pretty spectacular, I’ll give them that. You’re literally perched above the Dourbie River valley, and on clear mornings – which, let’s be honest, happen a lot here – you can see the Causses plateaus stretching out forever. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to blend serious outdoor amenities with that French attention to detail. The shower blocks are actually nice (heated floors, can you believe it?), and there’s this whole complex with pools and activities that keeps kids busy while parents can just… breathe for a minute. The pitches themselves are generous – no trying to squeeze your car between your neighbor’s awning and a tree.
Getting there from Millau takes about 30 minutes through some genuinely twisty roads, but that’s half the charm. You pass through Saint-Véran and wind along the gorge, and honestly, the drive itself is worth it. What makes this place work, though, is its position as a base camp for the serious outdoor stuff this region is famous for. I’m talking Via Ferrata routes literally walking distance away, some of the best hiking in southern France, and you’re close enough to the Tarn Gorge that you can do a day trip without the tourist bus crowds. The staff actually knows their stuff about local trails – not just the obvious ones everyone does, but the routes that locals use. Check-in was smooth (they speak decent English, which helps), and parking is included, which seems obvious until you’ve stayed places where it isn’t. My only real complaint? July and August get pretty packed with Dutch and German families, so if you want that peaceful mountain vibe, shoulder season is your friend. But even busy, there’s something about this spot that just works – maybe it’s the way the campsite terraces follow the natural slope, or how they’ve kept enough trees that you’re not camping in a parking lot. Either way, 8.2 rating feels about right for what you get.

We loved our stay, it was so quiet most days we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The kids loved the pool, the mini golf was fun for something different. Restaurant wasn't open during our stay but the takeaway pizzas were great. We stayed in the family tent and it was fantastic - comfortable and private with beautiful views, and we got lots...
