Blue Ocean Camp – Tasartico Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Blue Ocean Camp – Tasartico, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name. But this four-star property tucked away in the Caserio Tasartico area completely surprised me — in the best way possible. It’s not your typical beachfront resort, but rather something that feels more authentic and connected to the rugged landscape of Gran Canaria’s western coast. The approach alone tells you this is going to be different from your standard hotel experience.

Location & Setting

You know what struck me most about Tasartico? The dramatic contrast between the volcanic cliffs and the endless Atlantic stretching toward the horizon. This place sits in one of those spots where you feel genuinely removed from the tourist crowds — I mean, you’re still accessible to everything, but there’s this sense of being in your own private corner of the island. The drive here winds through some pretty spectacular scenery, and honestly, that’s part of the experience. Local fishermen still work from the small harbor below, and you’ll often see them heading out at dawn with their nets.

The Accommodations

The room I stayed in had this wonderful balance of comfort and simplicity that I really appreciated. Nothing overly fancy, but everything felt thoughtfully chosen — from the way the windows framed those ocean views to the little touches that made it feel more like a retreat than just another hotel stay. What I loved most was how quiet everything was at night, just the sound of waves in the distance. The beds are surprisingly comfortable for a place that feels so rustic, and the bathrooms have these lovely stone accents that echo the volcanic landscape outside.

Practical Perks

Here’s something that actually matters more than you might think — the parking situation is completely sorted. Free private spots right on site, which is honestly a relief when you’re exploring this part of the island by car (and trust me, you’ll want to). I spent my days driving to hidden beaches and volcanic landscapes, then coming back to this peaceful base where I could just unwind without worrying about where to leave the rental car. The staff here know all the best routes to take for scenic drives, and they’re genuinely excited to share their local knowledge.

Dining & Local Flavors

While there isn’t a formal restaurant on site, the breakfast setup they have is absolutely charming — fresh local bread, island-grown fruits, and coffee that actually tastes like it was made with care. What I discovered is that some of the best dining happens just a short drive away in the nearby villages, where family-run places serve the kind of authentic Canarian food you won’t find in the resort areas. The hosts here are brilliant at recommending spots where locals actually eat, not just tourist traps.

Why It Works

Look, couples seem to really get what this place is about — there’s something about the setting that just works for romantic getaways or quiet escapes together. Maybe it’s the way the sunsets paint everything golden from here, or how you can walk along the coastline without bumping into crowds every few meters. The whole experience feels more genuine than some of the bigger resort complexes, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need from a trip to the Canary Islands. I found myself actually relaxing here in a way that’s hard to achieve at busier properties.

Our decision to stay at Blue Ocean Camp was quiet spur of the moment. We were staying in Agaete in the north of the island and wanted to do the hike to Playa de GuiGui, so instead of tackling the 1 hour and 20mins drive to the trailhead at an ungodly hour in the morning on some pretty interesting roads we decided to check out accomodation near Tarstico and found Blue Ocean. We stayed in one of the huts, they are basic but provided exactly what we needed which was a basically a bed to get a good nights sleep before tackling the hike at sunrise! The communal bathrooms and showers were clean and the restaurant on site provides big portions of food for a very reasonable price. The pool area is great to chill out around and just a short walk down the road is a quiet little rock beach. The night skies are amazing, with zero light pollution you can see so many stars and constellations and if the moon isn't too bright the Milky Way too. Ocean Blue is only 2.5kms from the trailhead for the hike to Playa de GuiGui so is a great budget option if you want to tackle the hike, particularly if doing so during the summer months you need to start the hike at 7am the latest to avoid the intense heat in the gorge.
